Our traditional basket weaving patterns

Traditional basket weaving has been passed down many generations from our elders both past and present. We go out and collect fresh young green wattle grass for our elders. We bunch up the grass and leave to dry for a few days. The grass becomes dry and turns from green to golden yellow. We dig up roots from special plants and scrap the roots into fine powder.

We boil water and put the roots into the water and we get different colors. We put the dry wattle grass into the dye water to get the right colour. Finally, the dyed grass is ready for weaving. Our traditional basket weaving patterns are done carefully. The older elders are good and they weave fast and good. They make all sizes of puunya which is language word for traditional dilly bags or baskets.
